University of Helsinki

The University of Helsinki is Finland’s largest and oldest academic institution, with 11 faculties providing teaching on four campuses in Helsinki: the City Centre, Kumpula, Meilahti and Viikki. In international university rankings, the University of Helsinki is the only Finnish university to consistently rank in the top 100.

This exchange is open to students at undergraduate level only.

This exchange partner institution is available to students applying for Subject-specific exchange in the following subjects:

  • Law
  • Physics

If you are studying one of the above subjects, you should apply through the Subject-specific exchange route.

Students in other subject areas may also apply to the University of Helsinki via the University-wide exchange. It is a suitable destination for single and joint honours students in most subjects (including Economics).

You will be required to choose the majority of your courses from one faculty, and you can be only accepted by the faculty closest to your educational background. Also, note that you need to have sufficient prior academic background in the disciplines taught.

All University-wide applicants should check, before applying, that there are sufficient courses available in your subject area(s) and discuss your proposed choices with your School Exchange Coordinator.  You must meet the pre-requisite requirements for courses you wish to take. It is understood that quota limitations, normal timetabling and scheduling constraints apply to all students.

Restricted subject areas

This is not a suitable exchange destination for students studying the following subject areas:

  • English Literature
  • Media & Communication
  • Medicine
  • Politics
  • Vet Medicine

There is a wide range of courses taught in English but the number of places available for exchange students may be restricted. Applicants must therefore be flexible about their course choices.

Teaching is available in English.  Students should be able to take a full course load in English at this institution.

What our students said about Helsinki

The University of Helsinki had great student unity and culture, and more relaxed attitudes towards things such as due dates.

Going on an exchange is worth it no matter where you go. I loved the experience, and I really don't think it would have mattered where I went.

Although it is riskier to look for a flat on your own, it is worth it. There are plenty of good high quality cheap flats in the city center.
